about

REMOTE BASS - a brand new studio project between bassist Ben Adey and producer Tim Scott - will release their debut EP: ‘Impossible’ in 2021.

Combining Adey’s ear for infectious melodies with Scott’s ability to produce funk, soul and hip-hop infused wonderlands, the result is a set of glittering alternative anthems bathed in pop's incandescent glow. Speaking about how the EP came together, Remote Bass say:

“There was no action plan, we just got in the studio and started from scratch with no ideas, I picked up the bass that was laying around in the studio and played over some beats Tim had been working up and we worked on ideas, shared via voice memo and email and recorded when we could over Lockdown Mk1.”

Both retro in its appreciations and future-facing in its intentions, the ‘Impossible’ EP invites the listener down a rabbit hole of sunshine gilded fantasy guaranteed to shake the January blues.

“The songs for me aren’t methodical and wrote themselves very quickly, often on the spot in the studio” the band say, reflecting on the creative process. “We were really just in the moment, but on listening over them, I feel that there’s a lot of love in there and an element of optimism for the future.”

All elasticated basslines and tripping guitars, “Careless Love” opens the set with a sultry Jungle-meets-Thundercat slowjam. The Parliament-preened flare of “Right On Me” and the loucheley laid-back “Know Ya” slink with a mercurial funkiness, whereas “Even When It Breaks” shimmers with the endless possibilities of a golden summer. The EP closes with the casually ambitious “Movin”; it’s angular art-rock guitar riffs, jutting mechanical grooves and slick spoken-word courtesy of Ducklin Curlz, see Remote Bass bow-out with a track like Unknown Mortal Orchestra jamming with Anderson. Paak.

Recorded at Beat Palace, the ‘Impossible’ EP was written and produced by Remote Bass & Tim Scott. With Adey laying down bass / vocals and Scott taking the lead on beats / guitar, additional percussion was provided by drummer Jordan Rose (Cory Wong, Theo Katzman of Vulfpeck).

A playground of lopsided funk, soul and hip hop beats, Remote Bass let their imagination run free on their debut release. An EP that dares to dream, the ‘Impossible’ EP is out on February 14th via Royalty Capes.
